COB – Chip on Board

A chip-on -board is a chip that is wired and bonded onto a motherboard

The IC is usually covered with a coating of expoxy resin to protect it from heat and damage. This method of packaging means the completed product can be compact, lower cost and lighter in weight than a socketed chip.

However the disadvantage is that if the chip becomes damaged, you can easily remove it without de-soldering.
