IPS vs TFT

Which technology should I use to improve viewing angle and vibrancy without over-specifying?

Full story

The tried and trusted TFT is the display of choice for most industrial designs, but it does have its limitations in viewability and colour vibrancy.

But what about the relatively new technology, IPS (in plane switching) which has turned the TFT into a super-TFT?  IPS overcomes the viewing limitations of conventional TFT-LCDs.

IPS TFT exhibits high contrast and the background is true black when the display is powered down. It has better readability in sunlight and colour reproduction is more accurate. However, power consumption is higher and response times slightly slower than a traditional TFT.

An IPS display's contrast and colour are more consistent over a wider viewing angle and optimum visibility is achieved throughout wide-ranging conditions and environments, including sunlight.

On the other hand a TFT display is a tried and tested, mature technology that performs perfectly well for a lot of applications. Available in a wide range of sizes and can even be cut down to a custom size to fit into size restricted devices.

There are however negatives. Contrast can be limited, colour inversion can be seen at extreme viewing angles and the display is not completely black when off. The latter can be overcome somewhat with optical bonding.
