MIPI-DSI - Mobile Industry Processor Interface

What is a MIPI-DSI interface?

The MIPI Display Serial Interface (MIPI DSI) defines a high-speed interface between a host processor and a display module, and is specification of the MIPI alliance aimed at reducing the cost of display controllers in a mobile device.

The interface enables manufacturers to integrate displays to achieve high performance, low power, and low electromagnetic interference (EMI) while reducing pin count, which makes schematics and layout of the board much easier.

Designers can use MIPI DSI to realise brilliant colour rendering and depth for demanding high contrast imagery and fast moving video clips. The latest version, MIPI DSI-2SM, supports Ultra-high definition (4k and 8k) which is needed by mobile display requirements.

Features:

  • High performance
  • Low power
  • Low EMI emissions
  • Simple schematic layout

Where is the MIPI-DSI used?

MIPI specifications provide interface solutions for mobile handsets. As the traditional mobile ecosystem has expanded to include tablets and laptops, MIPI Alliance's specifications are implemented beyond mobile phones including: tablets, PCs and cameras. Although relatively new to the industrial space, MIPI is becoming more and more popular in industrial electronics, Machine to Machine (IoT), augmented reality, automotive, and medical technologies and is becoming increasing available across a range of display and embedded products.

Typical Applications:

  • Mobile phones
  • Tablets
  • Laptops
  • Smart watches
  • Smart meters
  • Video game consoles
  • Virtual Reality
